The monitoring portal is your operational dashboard for the system’s 25+ year life — showing real-time generation, daily totals, alarm history, and fault diagnostics. Without active monitoring, faults can go undetected for months, losing thousands of pounds of generation before discovery. Here’s the 2026 guide to farm solar monitoring.
What the monitoring portal shows
Real-time generation: current kW production from each inverter (and module-level on SolarEdge optimised systems). Today’s generation: kWh produced from sunrise to current time. This week / this month / this year: aggregated generation totals with comparison vs forecast. Performance ratio: % efficiency vs theoretical maximum for current irradiance. Self-consumption analysis: kWh used on-farm vs exported (where smart meter integration permits). Module-level performance: per-panel output where module-level monitoring is installed (SolarEdge primarily). Alarm history: every fault event, timestamp, resolution status. Inverter status: online/offline, communication signal strength.

What active monitoring detects
The most common fault types caught by monitoring:
Inverter communication loss — typically network connectivity issue, often resolves on power cycle. Detected within minutes; resolved within hours.
Inverter trip — usually grid quality issue or temporary fault. Often self-resolves but should be investigated if recurring. Detected within minutes.
String-level shading change — vegetation growth around the array, accumulated soiling on a specific section, or new structure (e.g., a portable building) blocking a section. Detected over days as performance ratio degrades on the affected string.
Module hot-spot or failure — single-panel issue. Detected within weeks on SolarEdge systems (module-level data shows clearly). On string-monitoring systems, can take longer to diagnose specifically but the overall string performance shows the issue.
DC arc fault — rare but serious safety issue. Detected within seconds, triggers immediate inverter shutdown and alarm. Requires on-site investigation before re-energising.
Alarm escalation
Properly configured alarms send automated notifications: email + SMS to the farm operator within minutes of detection; email to our monitoring team (if remote monitoring service is active); follow-up email after 24 hours if alarm not acknowledged. We configure alarm thresholds based on the system specification and farm operational requirements during commissioning.
Most farm operators we work with want low-priority alarms suppressed (e.g., brief inverter trips that auto-resolve) and high-priority alarms escalated (sustained zero generation, DC arc fault, persistent under-performance).
Remote monitoring service
Optional add-on we provide: active monitoring of the portal alarms on your behalf.
