Selecting the right solar panel brand for a UK farm-building installation matters more than most farms realise. Panel choice affects: long-term degradation rates (impacting 25-year yield), warranty terms (manufacturer + workmanship), and ultimate cost-per-kWh delivered over the system life. Here's the 2026 comparison.
The six brands we install across UK farms
**JA Solar.** Chinese tier-1 manufacturer, world's second-largest by volume. 540W modules cost £85–£95 landed UK. 12-year product warranty, 30-year linear performance warranty (0.55%/yr degradation). Strong global track record, well-established UK distribution. Our default choice for cost-sensitive farm projects.
**LONGi.** Chinese tier-1, market leader in monocrystalline silicon. 540W modules £88–£100 landed UK. 15-year product warranty (industry-best), 30-year linear performance (0.45%/yr degradation — industry-best). Premium choice with the longest manufacturer warranty in the market.
**Jinko Solar.** Chinese tier-1, formerly Jinko, now JinkoSolar. 540W modules £85–£98 landed UK. 12-year product, 30-year linear (0.5%/yr). Excellent technical specifications, particularly on bifacial modules for east-west and tracker installations. Strong UK presence with established commercial distribution.
**REC Group.** Norwegian-headquartered, Singapore-based manufacturing. Premium tier — 540W modules £105–£125 landed UK. 25-year product warranty (vs 12-year typical Chinese tier-1), 25-year performance warranty at 92% (vs 84% Chinese typical). Premium quality, premium price. Used on installations where long-term residual value matters.
**Q-Cells (Hanwha Q Cells).** South Korean and German manufacturing. Mid-premium tier — 540W modules £100–£115 landed UK. 12-year product warranty (extendable to 25 with Q-Cells Q.Service registration), 30-year linear performance. Excellent low-light performance, particularly relevant for UK installations.
**Trina Solar.** Chinese tier-1, top 3 global by volume. 540W modules £85–£95 landed UK. 12-year product warranty, 30-year linear (0.55%/yr). Strong commercial portfolio, well-suited to large-scale farm installs above 500 kW.
The right brand for your farm
For most UK farm installs in 2026 below 500 kW, JA Solar, LONGi, or Jinko deliver the best balance of cost and warranty. LONGi is our go-to when the client values the longer 15-year product warranty. JA Solar for tightest cost.
For installs above 500 kW, Trina's commercial portfolio and supply consistency typically wins. For installations where 25-year residual value or premium positioning matters (e.g., estate-tenanted projects where the system reverts to the landlord), REC or Q-Cells justify the cost premium.
We don't tie ourselves to any one manufacturer. Every quote includes a panel recommendation specific to the site geometry (orientation, shading, available area), the farm's strategic priorities (lowest cost vs longest warranty vs premium positioning), and current market pricing at time of quote.
What matters less than brand
Things that get over-emphasised in panel selection: brand origin (Chinese vs European — all reputable tier-1 manufacturers produce comparable quality); module size (most modern panels converge on 2x1 metre, 540W rated output); cosmetic features (all-black vs silver frame — affects appearance not yield).
Things that matter more than brand: site survey quality (shading, orientation, roof condition); inverter pairing (correct DC string sizing for the panel selection); installation workmanship (this is what our IWA 10-year workmanship warranty covers — independent of panel brand).
Inverter compatibility
Panel choice affects optimal inverter choice. High-voltage modern panels (540W at ~50V Voc) suit string inverters with high MPP tracking voltage (SolarEdge, SMA Sunny Tripower, Huawei SUN2000). Lower-voltage panels suit older string inverter ranges. We coordinate panel and inverter selection as a system rather than independent components.
